Forensic Science (Professional Practice and Research) Masters Project (BIO615)

Description This unit involves students in a supervised, advanced investigation of a selected research project topic related to their main area of study in forensic science or a related topic. It is designed to complete the requirements of the 48-point Master's degree. Research topics or a laboratory based work placement with a forensic institute, will be chosen in consultation with the Unit Coordinator and proposed Supervisor. The project or work placement will run over two semesters.
Unit Learning Outcomes After completing the unit students will be able to:
1. Acquire and apply a body of knowledge that includes the understanding of recent developments and research principles and methods applicable to Forensic Science
2. Investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories and apply established theories to the field of Forensic Science
3. Demonstration of communication and technical research skills to justify and interpret theoretical propositions, methodologies, conclusions and professional decisions to specialist and non-specialist audiences
4. Demonstrate the application of knowledge & skills to plan and execute a substantial research-based project.
5. Demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and reflect critically on theory and professional practice or scholarship
Timetabled Learning Activities
Unit Learning Experiences 1. Develop high level skills in the analysis, critical thinking and evaluation of the specialised area of forensic science or related topic. 2. Application of best scientific practice in method development. 3. Develop high skills in the planning and execution of their project work (time and task management). 4. Apply creativity and flexibility in the application of new knowledge and skills. 5. Applying initiative, independence and responsibility. 6. Enhanced communication (both written and oral) skills and team working ability. 7. Promotion of their skills and abilities to colleagues and forensic institutions.
Other Learning Experiences Formal contact will be 12 hours per student.
Assessment The students will be assessed on structure and content of their project. The assessment of the project report will focus on: 1. Evidence of depth and breadth of advanced knowledge in the specialist field, through the assessment of their literature review. 2. Application of research methodology and statistical analysis. 3. Application of new novel thinking in project design. 4. Structure and content of their method development. 5. Completion of set tasks within agreed time-lines. 6. Effectiveness of a presentation (written and oral) of project results to colleagues and relevant forensic institution.
Prerequisites Completion of all coursework units in M1292 being BIO596; BIO597; BIO598; BIO599; BIO682; BIO685; BIO692 and VLS683 or unless otherwise approved by the Academic Chair.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
