Medical Immunology and Molecular Genetics (BMS211)

Description This unit will provide basic knowledge and practical skills in medical immunology together with molecular and medical genetics. Sections comprise features of the immune response in both health and disease, including an understanding of immunopathogenic mechanisms of disease. Emphasis is also given to the structure and functioning of genes and how this molecular knowledge is increasingly being applied to diagnosis and treatment. Includes a practical laboratory component and a written assignment on a selected topic within immunology.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit students should be able to:
1) Define the types of immune defences that are present in humans
2) Explain how an immune response is triggered and leads to immunity from infection
3) Understand how the immune system is regulated, and how dysregulation leads to disease
4) Explain how vaccines and related immunotherapies work to prevent/treat infection and disease
5) Understand the nature of genes and explain gene manipulation
6) Outline the potential of molecular medicine for preventing, diagnosing and treating disease
7) Demonstrate effective teamwork
8) Utilise laboratory equipment in the execution of experiments
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 36 x 1 hour; Laboratory practicals (includes pre-labs): 6 x 3 hours; Workshops: 4 x 1 hour.
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit is to integrate the core concepts and learning outcomes in the topics of immunology and molecular genetics across the whole unit. Specific learning objectives for each lecture and practical are provided and linked to the overall unit learning outcomes. The lectures are strategically scheduled to link with the practical sessions and workshops to improve the learning environment by supporting theory with practical knowledge. A range of individual and group activities are scheduled throughout the course to direct learning towards the major concepts covered in the learning objectives. These assessments are designed to build confidence and competency, and to provide feedback on learning performance.
Assessment Students are exposed to a range of assessment types, including practical reports, in-class quizzes and written exam, as well as a written assignment. A blend of group activities and individual assessments are used to develop teamwork and individual confidence. Emphasis is given to student review of acquired knowledge throughout and feedback on assessments is used to guide students to work on any deficits in learning in core areas. A final theory exam (MCQ and short answer questions) is used to assess the integration of the student's learning across all learning outcomes.
Prerequisites BIO152 Cell Biology/ Foundations of Cell and Molecular Biology.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed BIO252/BIO243 Immunology, Vaccines and Cell Culture, BMS265 Medical Immunology and Molecular Genetics, VET347 Veterinary Immunology and Molecular Genetics may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
