Description | The aim of the unit is to equip students with graduate level understanding of routine diagnostic haematology practice and laboratory skills required to function in the haematology workplace. This unit covers professional issues related to working in the haematology laboratory, the pathophysiology and laboratory investigations of haematological malignancies, transfusion practice, transplantation science, molecular diagnostic techniques, and paediatric and obstetric haematology. | ||||
Unit Learning Outcomes | On completion of this unit, you should be able to demonstrate the following learning outcomes and skills: ULO1. Knowledge: you will demonstrate understanding of the role of haematological cells in health and disease, and demonstrate understanding of the principles and applications of haematological laboratory tests. ULO2. Communication: through the reporting of blood film morphology, transfusion science case studies, interactive analysis of haematological case studies and a research assignment. ULO3. Problem solving skills: through diagnostic strategies involved in the interpretation of laboratory results and clinical data. ULO4. Social responsibility: through the development of laboratory skills, analysis of laboratory data and communication involved in the diagnosis of haematological disease; to develop understanding of ethical issues and responsibilities related to haematology and the pathology industry. |

Timetabled Learning Activities | Lectures/Tutorials: 1 x 3 hours per week; laboratory sessions and/or tutorials: 3 hours per week. | ||||
Unit Learning Experiences | The learning experience in this unit consists of structured lecture content that is carefully aligned with practical laboratory sessions. In this way, the lectures inform the practical sessions, while the practicals reinforce the lecture content and develop the students experimental, generic and problem-solving skills. |

Assessment | To enable students to demonstrate their development of the knowledge and skills identified in ULO 1-4, there are three assessments: 1) Mid semester test: allows students to demonstrate and apply their theoretical and practical knowledge of haematological disorders and laboratory tests. Formative and summative feedback provided. 20% Individual. Early/mid teaching period. 2) Critical review: allows students to develop and demonstrate research and communication skills through the critical review, analysis and presentation of a specialised topic in haematology. Formative and summative feedback provided. 20% Individual. Mid/end teaching period. 3) Practical exam: allows student to demonstrate theoretical knowledge and practical competency of haematology laboratory methods and haematological disorders. Summative feedback provided. 30% Individual. End teaching period. 40) Final Theory Exam 30% |

Internet Access Requirements | Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online. |
