Research in the Physical and Life Sciences (BSC200)

Organisational Unit Medical, Molecular and Forensic Sciences

Description Students will develop core skills in thinking about approaches to research within the context of their discipline. Research begins through the evaluation of innovation and significance of a research topic. This leads to development of the research plan, experimental design, with ethics and statistical analyses of data, justified by rationale and expected outcomes from quantitative and/or qualitative data sampling. Finally students will consider how research is presented and communicated (verbal/written), reflecting on the research process to guide lifelong learning.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Solve scientific problems in different ways.
2. Explain the innovation and significance of specific research questions.
3. Understand and analyse both quantitative and qualitative data.
4. Demonstrate written and verbal communication skills in research presentation.
5. Critically evaluate other's research.
6. Demonstrate awareness of research ethics.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 hour per week; workshops: 1 x 2 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences BSC200 builds on the skills gained from the 1st year transition unit BSC150 and adds more depth to the philosophy of research, methodologies and ethics of research and research communication styles in written and oral outputs. The unit also maintains the reflective practice learnt in BSC150 and further develops time management skills in independent work.

The aim of BSC200 is to develop broad research skills. To achieve this, students will use both lectures and workshops, as well as work independently on in-class and online tasks. The lectures will serve to give an overview of the major topics within each module, and introduce the concepts of curiosity- and commercially-driven research projects. Research skills will be developed in the workshops, to give students the opportunity to directly apply research techniques and tools to the collection and analysis of a scientific data set relevant to their major of study. Unit topics will cover the fundamentals of research including inquiry, knowledge, design, ethics, data collection, analyses, presentation and communication.

Questions posted weekly on LMS need to be answered in preparation for the tutorial. Research skills will be developed in the tutorials to give students the opportunity to directly apply research techniques and tools to the design and analysis of a scientific data set relevant to their interests. Workshops will also involve discussions of research ethics, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of different analytical approaches, and how they might affect the validity of data. In small groups, students will be required to prepare an individual research proposal, poster and a short oral presentation engaging group discussions. Support for these activities will be made available through the tutorials and the online learning materials and discussion forums via LMS.
Other Learning Experiences Online assessment/Learning activity: 2 hours per fortnight.
Assessment Students will receive written feedback from the tutor on the research proposal and poster presentation. An online discussion forum will also be used to address specific questions arising from these activities. For the small group presentations the group will participate in a question and answer session following their presentation in which the tutor as well as their fellow students will provide critical feedback. Additionally, students are free to contact the unit coordinator and tutors and discuss their progress in the unit and assessments.

Report (Research proposal): 30% - Individual (1500 words)
Presentations: 40% Individual (poster 20% + oral presentation 10% + tutorial participation 10%)
Final exam: 30% - 2hr
Prerequisites BSC100 Building Blocks for Science Students; OR enrolment in B1329 Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Science and BED100 Ideas in Education.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed BSC201 Psychology: Measurement, Design and Analysis or
BSC206 Introduction to Research Methodology and Evidence Based Practice or BSC203 Introduction to ICT Research Methods may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
