Introduction to ICT Research Methods (BSC203)

Description This unit provides an introduction to research in the information and communications technology (ICT) discipline. It explores the kinds of research questions addressed in ICT research, and provides an opportunity for students to understand the broad range of research approaches used in ICT research including: design research, experimental research, survey research, action research and case study research. Students will develop both research and project management skills and gain the knowledge and skills needed to critically evaluate the ICT research literature.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 hour per week; tutorials: 1 x 2 hours per week.
All offerings of this unit include the equivalent of 30 hours of structured learning.
Unit Learning Experiences The unit material is divided into a number of topics roughly corresponding to teaching weeks. Topic 1 provides background to the unit and places ICT research in a broader research context. The remaining topics cover different specific aspects of conducting and managing ICT research projects and evaluating other people's research. However, most of the topics are interrelated and you will be supported in relating the understanding you gain from one topic to other topics.
Internal students:
This unit has one 1 hour lecture per week in which the major topics are introduced. This material will be built upon in weekly 2 hour tutorials. Each class will include a mixture of discussion and group activities, such as project management exercises, data analysis exercises, evaluation of published research and poster presentations,

External students:
External students will have access to lecture material and recordings via the LMS. They will be assigned an external tutor and undertake the same tutorial activities as internal students, where possible in collaboration with one another supported by the LMS.
Assessment Assessment in this unit will involve a mixture of individual and group tasks designed to introduce you to different aspects of ICT research. These include understanding what research has been done previously in an area and designing and reporting on new research. Written feedback will be provided for all submitted work. Verbal feedback will be provided for class activities on a weekly basis either individually or as a group depending on the task.

Prerequisites BSC100 Building Blocks for Science and enrolment in one of the following Information technology majors: Computer Science or Business Information Systems or Cyber Forensics and Information Security or Games Software Design and Production, or Games Technology or Internetworking and Network Security or Mobile and Web Application Development.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed BSC201 Psychology: Measurement, Design and Analysis or BSC206 Introduction to Research Methodology and Evidence Based Practice or BSC200 Research in the Physical and Life Sciences may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
