Description | This unit introduces students to the Australian legal system, its operation and development, and to the principles of law applicable to core areas of business, such as contract law, tort law and agency law. Students studying Business will usually find this unit essential and prerequisite to further studies. |
Unit Learning Outcomes | On successful completion of this unit you should be able to: 1. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the Australian legal system in the context of the business world; 2. Explain basic business law principles including rules associated with aspects of agency law, contract law and tort law; 3. Apply legal problem solving skills to hypothetical business law scenarios and/or case studies; 4. Communicate legal information effectively to a range of audiences using sources and referencing appropriate for the discipline. |
Timetabled Learning Activities | 12 x 2 hour workshops. All offerings of this unit include the equivalent of 30 hours of structured learning. |
Unit Learning Experiences | This unit is delivered using blended learning design features with some materials provided in a digital format followed by small class knowledge, application and skills development. This is enhanced by self directed learning to further develop skills and application of knowledge to a range of legal problems relevant to the business world. |

Assessment | Internal students : 1 online test - 10%, a problem solving assignment - 30% , an exam -50% and workshop participation - 10% . External Students: Two online tests - 20% , a problem solving assignment - 30% and an exam - 50%. |

Exclusions | Students who have successfully completed BUS165 Principles of Commercial Law may not enrol in the unit for credit, and students who are enrolled in the Bachelor of Law (LLB) may not enrol in this unit for credit. |

Internet Access Requirements | Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online. |
