Introduction to Chiropractic (CHI109)

|Description||This unit provides the initial step towards becoming a member of the chiropractic profession. From a sociological perspective it examines the history of the professions in general and that of chiropractic specifically. It introduces skills, knowledge, and attitudes including the core professional virtues of trustworthiness and altruism. It examines the profession's past and present interface with society, particularly the doctor/patient relationship. Practical sessions build psychomotor skills in palpation by exploring surface anatomy and developing basic massage techniques.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1. List the five core branches of classical philosophy and discuss the issues relating to the structure of knowledge and justification of their limits (epistemology).
2. Explain the fiduciary duties associated with status professionals and how those duties emerged historically.
3. Discuss the challenges the chiropractic profession faces both internally and externally, and their historical causes.
4. Describe the rapidly changing health care landscape - the drivers of change and the mechanisms that will bring about the changes required to meet the health care needs of the population in the 21st Century. Discuss modes of care for primary contact health care providers and their application.
5. Demonstrate the proper use of the equipment and proper positioning of a patient on the equipment in the chiropractic techniques laboratory.

7. Demonstrate proficient palpation of the osseous, ligamentous and muscular tissues of the head, abdomen, thorax and pelvis as outlined in this manual.
8. Demonstrate an ability to apply basic soft tissue therapy techniques.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures/Online learning: 1 hour per week; tutorial/workshops: 1 hour per week; practical laboratories: 2 hours per week.
In the recommended pathway of study for the B Sc Chiropractic, CHI109 is an S2 unit.
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is focused on active learning. The 'history and principles' portion of the unit utilises a combination of learning strategies in weekly one-hour tutorials. These include: active learning, collaborative learning, cooperative learning and team based learning. A one-hour interactive lecture per week provides valuable background for successful tutorials. The surface anatomy portion of the unit takes place during a weekly two hour practical session and utilizes a combination of approaches to learning psychomotor skills including: demonstrations, physical practice (repetition with the intent of improved performance), feedback/knowledge of results and peer teaching.|
|Assessment||Mid-Semester Practical - demonstrate practical skills and knowledge gained practical classes. It will be scheduled in Week 6 and include practical class content from weeks 1-4 inclusive.
Mid-Semester Theory - tests knowledge and understanding of the unit's theory components. Feedback by way of written assessment. This assessment will include Multiple Choice, True/False, Extended matching or Short Answer questions
Final Practical - tests proficiency in the practical aspects of the Unit. A marking rubric is used and provides feedback.
Final Theory - one essay style question on the culture of chiropractic and its impact on the profession's development. Written feedback is given after the essay is marked. The assessment tests understanding and higher order thinking of the topic.
|Notes||In the recommended pathway of study for the BSc Chiropractic, CHI109 is an S2 unit. The S1 offering is to meet the needs of students who have been granted Advanced Standing for Semester 1 units, or students who are NOT enrolled in the Chiropractic Science degree and are choosing the unit as a general elective. Students enrolled in the BSc Chiropractic need to seek the approval from the Academic Chair (Chiropractic, years 1-3) to enrol.
This unit will only be run in S1 if there is sufficient demand.

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
