Differential Diagnosis (CHI456)

|Description||This unit stresses clinical decision-making. It builds on earlier diagnosis units, further developing students' diagnostic, and patient management skills. Focusing on the differential diagnosis of the patient's presenting complaint; consideration is given to the differential diagnosis of symptoms suggesting dysfunction of the musculoskeletal system and how to distinguish those from the more serious visceral or medical presentations. Also, the need for appropriately referring a patient where necessary is discussed.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On completion of this unit students are expected to be able to:
1. Interpret history data and physical examination finding using their prior knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, biomechanics, and diagnosis;
2. Formulate a problem list for each patient and an appropriate differential diagnosis list;
3. Review the differential diagnosis list after more information is provided and make changes if needed;
4. Develop a problem-oriented, scientifically valid approach in organising information leading to a working diagnosis;
5. Justify the working diagnosis using information gained from the patient history, physical examination and special tests/investigations.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lecture: 2 hours per week; Tutorial: 1 hour per week.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||This unit utilises an adult learning approach where students are expected to take responsibility for their learning. They are also required to undertake a significant portion of the directed study. Lecture content of weekly topics is delivered face-to-face with the opportunity to discuss components of the content and ask questions. Lectures are supported by tutorials in which case-based discussions offer students the opportunity for, expansion, clarification and elaboration on the weekly topics from their lectures and readings. This unit will incorporate case-based and self-directed learning via the textbooks, cases and readings. Some online modules may be provided where possible.|
|Assessment||Assessment in this unit are design to evaluate the students in order to:
1. Demonstrate the ability to link their acquired knowledge, skills and attributes to other units, such as diagnosis, radiology and patient management;
2. Demonstrate critical thinking and decision-making skill needed for effective differential diagnosis relevant to chiropractic practice.
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in Chiropractic Science + Clinical Chiropractic (BSc, BClinChiro), and successful completion of Years 1 to 3 (Chiropractic Science), or permission of the Unit Coordinator.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
