Public Health and Nutrition III (CHI458)

|Description||This unit is concerned with the health of the community as a whole. It will review the main determinants of mortality and morbidity internationally but with emphasis on Australia. Public Health also reviews community groups and special populations. Scenarios and problem solving derived from larger populations and a research project will form an important component of this unit and students will work in small groups to achieve this. Expert interdisciplinary practitioners with experience in the area of speciality will present.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||LO1. Recognise the various areas of public health and their utility
LO2. Recognise basic public health and epidemiological terms
LO3. Assemble, retrieve, critique and synthesise information on pertinent public health questions
LO4. Demonstrate an understanding and present the findings of an undergraduate research project particularly in a public health context.
LO5. Gain understanding of important role of nutrition in health and the prevention of disease: discuss nutrition-related conditions and diseases, identify risk factors; and describe preventive measures and nutritional management where appropriate.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||3 hours of lecture per week|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is by attending lectures that are often provided by experts from the various public health fields in industry. Discussion and questions are highly encouraged to obtain the best information from these speakers. ... In addition students select a public health topic of interest and prepare an evidence based brochure in lay terms for public consumption on this topic.
Nutritional case studies will be presented to students as examples to enable them to become familiar with clinical nutrition.
|Assessment||For the public health component students are required to submit lecture summaries of just one A4 page after each lecture and create a brochure promoting an aspect of public health of their choosing. For the Nutrition component students are required to create a case study.|
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in Chiropractic Science + Clinical Chiropractic (BSc + BClinChiro) and successful completion of Years 1-4.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
