Mental Health Issues in Chiropractic Care and Applied Nutrition (CHI466)

|Description||This unit will provide an overview of the science and profession of psychology; its role in health care, and specifically, in chiropractic care. It will overview relevant psychological models of human behaviour, emphasising bio-psycho-social interactions. It will explore a range of normal and abnormal psychological presentations that might commonly be seen in chiropractic practice, focusing on information gathering, effective communication, identification, practitioner response and the importance of appropriate referral.
Applied nutrition component will be included.
|Unit Learning Outcomes||ULO 1. Apply and evaluate general nutrition advice and recommend healthy eating for each life stage in the context of health promotion involving individual consultations and community programs.
ULO 2. Understand and evaluate the major psychological influences in human development and behaviour.
ULO 3. Understand and evaluate clinical situations where there may be possible psychological influences on current chiropractic patient presentations.
ULO 4. Understand and apply the application of a biopsychosocial approach to patient assessment and care.
ULO 5. Remember and understand the most commonly presenting psychological disorders in chiropractic practice, and best-practice treatment for these disorders.
ULO 6. Understand and apply the appropriate screening instruments for the most commonly presenting psychological disorders to chiropractic practice.
ULO 7. Demonstrate the ability to make appropriate referral to mental health professionals based on an assessment.
ULO 8. Demonstrate effective clinical communication skills through a Motivational Interviewing framework
ULO 9. Understand and apply general nutrition advice and create healthy eating for each life stage in the context of health promotion involving individual consultations and community programs.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||This will involve a weekly 3 hour workshop.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||This unit will provide an overview by a variety of lecturers on the science and profession of psychology; the role of psychology in health care, and specifically, in chiropractic care. The unit will overview relevant psychological models of human behaviour, with an emphasis on biopsychosocial interactions. It will explore some of the range of normal and abnormal psychological presentations that might commonly be seen in chiropractic practice, focusing on information gathering, effective communication, identification, practitioner response and the importance of appropriate referral. There will be workshop where students will practice there communication skills.
Applied nutrition: Nutritional requirements during the human life cycle will include case studies in each life stage to simulate the real life situations.

|Prerequisites||Enrolment in Chiropractic Science + Clinical Chiropractic (BSc + BClinChiro) and successful completion of Years 1-4.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
