|Description||This unit aims to equip you with an understanding of social policy, and how the policy context shapes community-based work. The unit focuses on the intersection between social policy and community - exploring ideas about the way political philosophies and concepts of community influence social policy formation and implementation, the attributes and limitations of the way policy is made, as well as the key role played by language in the social policy discourse.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should:
1. Understand the ways in which social policy ideas have changed over time.
2. Understand recent trends in Australian social policy, and the issues influencing social policy formation.
3. Be familiar with the ways in which concepts of 'community' shape social policy.
4. Understand the role language plays in social policy discourse.
5. Have developed skills in social policy analysis.
6. Have improved research and problem-solving skills.
7. Have improved oral and written communication skills.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures: 1 hour per week (12 weeks)
Workshops: 1.5 hours per week (12 weeks)
|Unit Learning Experiences||The unit will use a combination of lectures and tutorials for internal students and recorded lectures, online discussions and self-directed learning activities for on-line students. Like other community development units, the learning approach adopted is shaped by inductive traditions of learning. In other words students are invited to observe examples of social policy (through online, digital video and written examples of current policy) and invited to draw out learning, ideas and concepts through discussion, reflection and observation.|
|Other Learning Experiences||Written assignments, reading, viewing of practice examples and reflection on community development practice.|
|Assessment||Students are asked to prepare written assignments that examine particular fields of interest in the social policy field, the influence of language in social policy and to explore how theory and practice intersect. The assessments are designed to build student skills in research, social policy analysis and community-based policy development.

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
