Community Development Theory and Practice (COD545)

Description The unit begins by comparing and contrasting what different people say when they try and describe community development. To help in this regard it provides an introduction to the range of theoretical traditions that have shaped community development practice. The unit also turns itself to business of writing for a community audience. Students will be asked to begin the process of using skills learnt at university to assist community groups achieve some of their aspirations.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 2 hours per week
Tutorial: 1 hour per week
Unit Learning Experiences Students are offered reading material and access to lectures that introduce people to community development. In addition the unit is arranged into six workshops for internal students and set of workshop scripts, PowerPoint presentations, online discussions and self-directed learning activities for online students. The learning approach adopted is strongly shaped by inductive and experiential traditions of learning. In other words, there will be a combination of instruction that provides a background and context to the field of inquiry, exploration of case studies.
Other Learning Experiences Written assignments, reading, viewing of practice examples and reflection on writing for community development.
Assessment Diagnostic writing 10%
Reading journal 30%
Writing for community project and reflection 30%
Essay exam on traditions of community practice 30%
The assessment is designed to build student's conceptual knowledge and exercise their skills in writing for different audiences.
Prerequisites Enrolment in a Graduate course.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed COD125 Introduction to Community Development cannot enrol in this unit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
