|Description||Community Development is an idea becoming popular in many sectors, reflecting the growing need of organisations to find ways to build relationships with local communities. Often those working in these areas have little training in how to go about this work, the methodologies that have been adopted elsewhere and the practices that can make the work unique. This unit is designed for students who ask the question: 'how can we work well with community and what tools can we use?'|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||Students will be able to:
1 Articulate what might be meant by 'community development method', using their own experience of practice and various texts.
2 Test out a number of community development skills including micro-method skills of deep listening and language learning, making connections, participating in dialogue, listening to and working with 1st and 2nd stories; mezzo-method skills of moving a private concern to public action, the use of triads, the place of creativity in community; building organisations and nurturing partnerships; and coalition making and social action.
3 Describe and test out the methodologies being used in in a specific community or around a particular issue or challenge of interest or concern.
4 Apply an understanding of community development to a specific local context.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||5 x 6 hour workshops (to be scheduled as an early semester 3 day series and a later in the semester 2 day series)|
|Unit Learning Experiences||Students will undertake a variety of on-campus and off-campus experiences introducing them to the ideas and practices in community development, including:
· Language learning and ontological translation
· Guest speakers talking about their conceptual and methodological frameworks
· Collaborative multi-modal skills development exercises
· Workshops that build connections between methodological traditions
· Through the use of multi-media content introduce people to different examples of community development methodology.
Learning experiences will foster a regular learning rhythm and reflective practice where students:
· Look outward: Read, view or experience something new
· Look inward: Stop-think-reflect
· Respond: producing written pieces, audio or video, and other creative work.
· Share their work with peers and colleagues through skills practice
Respond to others' work in ways that foster new learning, cooperation and strong working relationships.

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
