Description This unit will help you make the transition to university culture and introduce you to the range of skills needed across the Creative Media disciplines. These include specific analytical and conceptual skills around Creative Media as well as more general thinking, problem-solving and communication skills. It will develop interpersonal skills that encourage you to question, listen and act ethically; tolerate ambiguity, embrace openness, curiosity and intellectual risk-taking; to make connections within and between disciplines; and to work collaboratively.
Unit Learning Outcomes ULO1 Develop knowledge of theoretical perspectives and methods needed in Creative Media disciplines.
ULO2 Develop clearer written and oral communication with a range of audiences, producing work consistent with the contemporary norms and standards of a discipline and its related industries.
ULO3 Synthesise and critically evaluate creative content, ideas, and information to develop coherent arguments.
ULO4 Employ a range of strategies and methods for research appropriate to the discipline and related industries with a capacity for independent enquiry and lifelong learning.
ULO5 Develop interpersonal and collaborative skills.
ULO6 Demonstrate academic and ethical integrity in citing and acknowledging sources.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lecture: 1 hour per week x 10 weeks. Tutorial: 2 hours per week x 10 weeks.
Unit Learning Experiences Students will examine a range of media outputs such as magazines, comics, fine art, film, television, games, recorded music and websites to develop ways of discussing, criticising and examining creative works, creative processes and creative ideas.
Assessment Assessment for this unit consists of in-class participation, oral presentation; online referencing quiz and the development of a portfolio. Students will be provided with feedback throughout the semester. In addition to summative written feedback from your tutor on all assessments, there will be a class debrief of the referencing quiz and feedback from peers for oral presentations. You will also be expected to complete self-reflections on your progress in the unit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
