Introduction to Creative Arts Therapies in Counselling (CSL576)

Description This unit presents an introductory exploration of creative arts therapies theory and practice to develop a foundation from which further learning can occur. A central focus in the unit is the potential for the arts therapies to provide therapeutic outcomes through working with imagination and imaginative expression and the connection between physiological and psychological dimensions to human experience.Development of creative practice for self-exploration is a key focus in this unit
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit, you will have:
1. Acquired knowledge and experience of a range of creative arts therapy modalities, materials, processes and skills that can be used to enrich the counselling process.
2. Demonstrated a depth of engagement when working with this knowledge and experience to develop imaginative and expressive responses that explore situational and individual experiences.
3. Gained understanding of the philosophical and theoretical frameworks that informs the creative arts therapies, with specific focus on the use of imagery and metaphor, as a counselling medium.
4. Identified the characteristics of the arts therapies with which you resonate and choose to develop further in your practice as a counsellor.
5. Articulated your position in relation to working with the creative arts therapies in counselling and be able to substantiate your position with reference to your experiential learning and reading of the philosophical and theoretical literature.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures and workshops: 8 x 1.5 hour lecture followed by 2 hour tutorial workshops, 1 x 3.5 hour drama therapy workshop, 1 x 4.5 hour arts installation workshop.
Unit Learning Experiences Students are introduced to the arts therapies both experientially and theoretically. The creation of imagery, movement, enactment, reflective practice and group discussion are fundamental tools to learn how flexibly to engage with human experience in a wide range of contexts. Delivery of this unit is through lecture followed by experiential and interactive tutorials requiring reflective and active expressive participation from all students. In-class, students will engage in expressive activities across a range of arts modalities including visual art, drama and creative writing. Additionally, creative work developed at home is central to the learning process and is required for the development of the creative process portfolio and arts installation and the reflective learning journal. Possible modalities explored for these assessments include visual art, textiles, drama, movement, music, creative writing, video and photography. Required readings completed each week develop the theoretical understanding necessary to engage with and contribute to in-class discussions and to address the assessments tasks.
Assessment Students produce reflective portfolios based on the theoretical material presented in the unit as well as experiential learning components and applied skills. Tutors will provide formative and summative feedback on assignments and in the tutorial setting. Peer activities and self-reflective practice will be further sources of feedback. Development of the capacity to create and understand arts-based expressions of self, integration of such understanding in terms of case conceptualisation, the ability to review critically self and other development and the capacity for analytical thinking all comprise assessed elements in this unit via the reflective portfolios. Students will create their learning journal and process portfolio online in PebblePad.
Prerequisites Enrolment in the Graduate Diploma of Creative Arts Therapies or the Graduate Diploma of Counselling or Master of Counselling. Other students wanting to study this unit can be interviewed by the Academic Chair of the Graduate Diploma of Creative Arts Therapies
Quota This unit is subject to quota. Quota is due to limited resources and space requirements. Must be approved by Unit Coordinator

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
