Living and Learning with Technology (EDN113)

Description This unit focuses on technologies, not as hardware and software that are objects of study themselves, but as tools for personal learning and contemporary teaching. The unit will give students the opportunity to explore technology as social beings, as student learners and as classroom teachers. Weekly digital end products created by students will be documented and shared and assignment tasks will focus on the creation of meaningful products such as websites, blogs and digital teaching resources.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate understanding of safe, responsible and ethical use of technologies in learning and teaching.
2. Use a range of software, applications and technologies with confidence.
3. Access and evaluate web-based resources.
4. Collaboratively plan, create, organise and publish information-rich meaningful learning tasks and curriculum using a range of software and web applications.
5. Demonstrate ways of using ICT as cognitive tools in educational settings.
Timetabled Learning Activities Workshops: 2 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit is a guided approach based on meaningful learning principles. This class will not teach technology tools in a step-by-step fashion, but students will be guided to learn in collaborative classes focusing on support. The guiding approach is that students learn best 'with' technology rather than 'from' it. Whatever the level of expertise with technology and ICTs, beginner or expert, this unit will allow students to demonstrate learning and growth in the use of ICTs over the semester. Students will be expected to explore ICT tools, read widely and apply the key topics and concepts addressed in this unit to the digital end products and teaching resources they create. Learning in this unit will be applicable throughout the course and into the students' teaching careers.

Notes The unit is designed for students to use their own technology. Internal classes are not held in computer labs. Students need to bring a laptop to class.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
