Thinking Mathematically (EDN114)

Description This unit is designed for future teachers of K-7 mathematics. Both the content: number and algebra; geometry and measurement; probability and statistics; and the characteristic processes of problem solving, reasoning and numeracy are addressed.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1. Understand the key mathematical concepts addressed in the primary and middle years of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics
2. Confidently and fluently exercise the mathematical skills and processes associated with the primary and middle years of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics
3. Understand how you learn mathematics, and use this understanding to take initiatives and learn mathematics independently
4. Access and use appropriate resources, including online and ICT resources, to support your own and your students' learning of mathematics
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 hour per week; workshops: 2 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit is through a lecture-workshop format complemented by a broad range of online resources. The lectures highlight concepts through examples while the workshops provide a range of learning activities to promote understanding. External students should listen to lecture recordings, complete the recommended activities, and engage regularly in online discussions with peers.

Assessment There are three main assessment strategies: online quizzes, written assignments and an open-book restricted exam. There are five online quizzes comprising multiple-choice and short-answer items. They are designed to provide feedback on students' learning of mathematical content knowledge related to the Australian Curriculum. There are two written assignments: one requires students to create a poster that looks at everyday life with a mathematical eye while the other is based on mathematical exploration. Both assignments address the learning objective of fostering students' understanding of the significance of mathematics and mathematical thinking processes. The exam is a summative assessment to ensure students have the required understanding of key mathematical concepts as well as the associated skills and processes.
Prerequisites Enrolment in an initial teacher education course.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed EDU162 Cultural Mathematics may not enrol in this unit for credit.
Notes Students who have not successfully completed mathematics to at least Stage 2 Year 12 level are strongly encouraged to complete EDN110 Mathematics for Teaching before enrolling in EDN114.
If students fail EDN110 they cannot enrol in EDN114 Thinking Mathematically. If students fail EDN114 and have not already completed EDN110, then they must complete EDN110 before enrolling again in EDN114.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
