Description | This unit will consider the learning, teaching and assessment strategies of P-6 mathematics with particular emphasis on identifying and catering for the needs of students with learning difficulties and mild disabilities. Students critically examine key issues, research and approaches in mathematics and numeracy instruction for students with learning difficulties. Students are provided with information and experiences which assists them to utilise appropriate diagnostic tools, interpret student responses and develop programs based on their findings.
Unit Learning Outcomes | Students will: 1. Describe and critically analyse key issues and approaches in numeracy instruction for students with learning difficulties and disabilities. 2. Determine and utilise appropriate diagnostic tools to identify the common learning difficulties experienced by children in developing mathematical concepts and skills and understand mathematical learning difficulties experienced by individual children. 3. Develop detailed lesson plans for student with learning difficulties and mild disabilities involving adaptation of mainstream curricula and based on effective use of diagnostic instruments 4. Develop individual education programs in core skills and understandings in number sense, measurement, calculation and problem solving for students with a range of disabilities 5. Construct and/or select learning experiences as appropriate for student's instructional needs 6. Facilitate students' understanding and use of the language of mathematics in carrying out their mathematical activities |
||||
Timetabled Learning Activities | Lectures: 1 hour per week; workshops: 2 hours per week
Unit Learning Experiences | The unit combines lectures with interactive workshops that include group activities, collective and individual reflections, case-based or video-based discussions of practice, discussion of readings, and role-play. The unit will make use of blended learning strategies through the use of LMS and other digital tools/media.
Assessment | Assignment 1 (30%): A detailed 10 minute mini lesson plan for a student with learning difficulties and/or mild disabilities involving adaptation of mainstream curricula and based on effective use of diagnostic instruments. Aligned to Learning Objectives 1, 2, 3 & 5. Assignment 2 (40%): A mathematics education program in core skills and understandings in either number sense, measurement, calculation or problem solving for a group of diverse students including students with a range of mild disabilities. Aligned to Learning Objectives 1, 4, 5 & 6. Assessment 3 (30%): A presentation of the mathematics program students have developed for a group of diverse students either in a workshop or on LMS via video. Aligned to Learning Objectives 4, 5 & 6. |

Internet Access Requirements | Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online. |
