Country, Cultures, Peoples: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives Across the Curriculum (EDN353)

Description This unit was developed in response to the ACARA, Early Years Learning Framework (2009) and AITSL. These National Standards require students to demonstrate broad knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Country, Cultures and Peoples and to have a graduate-level understanding of strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Students need to read critically, reflect on a range of matters, including teaching strategies and curricular issues, and demonstrate and understand the protocols involved in working with Indigenous peoples.
Unit Learning Outcomes This unit addresses selected University's Graduate Attributes as well as the AITSL standards for teachers:
1. Strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
2. Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Hence, to successfully complete this unit, students will be able to demonstrate:
1. Understanding of strategies that are responsive to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their communities.
2. The capacity to plan effectively for teaching and learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures using different subject areas, outcomes and cross curricula priorities.
3. An acknowledgement of and respect for equality of opportunity and an understanding of the cultural diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
4. The ability to analyse and evaluate resources for classroom use.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: Online 1 hour per week; Internal workshops: 2 hour per week. On-line Weekly Topic Synopsis and Discussion Forum
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit is through lectures, seminars, online discussion forum and independent research.
Other Learning Experiences Each student will be required to show evidence of their learning to meet the AITSL Standards 1.4 and 2.4. 1. Engagement, participation and contribution in a flipped classroom approach. 2. Researching personal understanding of Belonging and Connection to place. 3. Visual Representations. 4. Mind Mapping rationale for teaching Aboriginal studies and perspective. 5. Group collaborative activities. Ongoing Feedback will be provided during online or face-to-face workshops.
Assessment Assessment components are based on the Organising Ideas for the first cross-curriculum priority of the Australian Curriculum: Country, Cultures, Peoples. All assessments are scaffolded in order for students to demonstrate their understanding of Aboriginal peoples, cultures and histories. All assessments are linked to the AITSL Standards 1.4; 2.4, The Aboriginal Cultural Framework and the SCSA cross-curricular priorities. 1. Personal Approach to Teaching and Rationale for including Indigenous perspectives; 2. Researching an Indigenous person of note (either historical or contemporary); 3. Researching the history of the country on which students live (or work), as well as cultural practices salient to the Indigenous peoples of this country; Feedback will be provided during on-line or face-to-face workshops
Prerequisites Enrolment in an initial teacher education course.
Successful completion of EDN221 Learning and Teaching
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed EDN224 Social Justice may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
