Creating and Managing Effective Learning Environments (EDN358)

|Description||This unit focuses on ways of enhancing the learning of all students by examining the cognitive, emotional, social and behavioural factors which impact on the ecology of inclusive learning environments. It considers whole school, community, classroom and individual teaching and learning adjustments to meet diverse student needs. The unit includes lectures run by invited speakers (community agents, mental health professionals, and in-service teachers) allowing students to reflect upon the complexities involved in creating and managing effective learning environments in real settings.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||1. Demonstrate increased awareness of the range of motivational, emotional, social and behavioural factors relevant to the creation of effective learning environments
2. Analyse situations and select appropriate strategies for creating cognitively challenging and emotionally safe learning settings to meet the diverse needs of students
3. Become familiar with specific strategies to manage classroom activities and student behaviour with a focus on preventative strategies
4. Understand the relevant legislative, administrative and organisational policies and processes required for teachers according to school stage
5. Reflect on learning within the Unit to develop a classroom management plan
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures: 1 hour per week; workshops: 2 hours per week,|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The unit combines lectures with interactive workshops that include group activities, collective and individual reflections, case-based or video-based discussions of practice, discussion of readings, and role-play.|
|Assessment||Assignment 1 (30%): Students research classroom management strategies and reflect upon how these ideas and practices connect with their beliefs and learning in the unit. Aligned to Learning Objective 1.
Assignment 2 (40%): Students are asked to develop a classroom management plan with a focus on proactive and intervention strategies. Aligned to Learning Objectives 2 & 3.
(30%) Oral presentation: Covers critical unit content in the form of an oral presentation of their classroom management plan. Aligned to all 4 Learning Objectives.
Students should expect quantitative feedback as well as qualitative comments on their work with a focus on specific areas of improvement
|Prerequisites||Co-enrolment in, or successful completion of, EDN221 Learning and Teaching|
|Exclusions||Students who have successfully completed EDN422 Creating Effective Learning Environments cannot take this unit for credit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
