Professional Experience: Programming Across the Curriculum (EDN4100)

Description The unit typically occurs in the fourth year of study in a Bachelor of Education course. It incorporates a compulsory two-week placement in a school. Students complete tasks before, during and after the placement. The 10-day placement provides opportunities for pre-service teachers to strengthen the nexus between theory and practice under the guidance of an experienced mentor Teacher. AITSL standards frame unit outcomes and expectations.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of the content and teaching strategies of English, Math, Science/S&E.
2. Organise content into an effective learning and teaching sequence.
3. Plan lesson sequences using knowledge of student learning, content and effective teaching strategies.
4. Demonstrate the capacity to organise classroom activities and provide clear directions.
5. Demonstrate understanding of assessment strategies to assess learning.
6. Demonstrate understanding of the purpose of providing timely and appropriate feedback to students about their learning.
7. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers in identifying professional learning needs.
Timetabled Learning Activities Online participation - Assignment 1; two week block placement.-Assignment 2
Unit Learning Experiences Pre-service will be allocated a school for the whole year, and will be expected to visit the school on at least three separate occasions before the start of the two-week block placement in School Term 2 (Day 1 and 2 of school term 1 is preferable if placement has been confirmed). These early visits will help you become familiar with the school, the class and the teacher's expectations and practices. During the first three visits you will begin to develop your two-week plan for the class you will teach. During the block placement you will be expected to teach across all learning areas in the Primary curriculum. Following the block placement you are then expected to visit the school on two more occasions, to work on assessment and moderation tasks for students and evaluation of your own performance.
The practical component of this unit will be supplemented by online lecture/seminar sessions, designed to support your learning of the key objectives for this unit. All sessions will be recorded and made available online.
Other Learning Experiences Two week block placement to occur in the first two weeks of School Term 1 (note that this is prior to the start of Semester 1).Additional days' attendance at the school prior to placement to attend school based professional development.
This school experience will be in the same school as the final placement unit (FPE1 &2).
Assessment Assessment in this unit is designed to identify the extent to which students have addressed the required Australian Graduate Teacher Standards and Murdoch Graduate Attributes as well as their capacity to plan, teach, assess and moderate childrens' work.
Students must pass every component in order to pass the unit.
1. Successful completion of, and Engagement with, weekly tasks
2. Successful completion of placement.
Prerequisites Successful completion of EDN3102 Professional Experience: Mathematics in Practice.
Concurrent enrolment in or successful completion of EDN441 Teaching Humanities and Social Sciences in Primary Schools and EDN442 Teaching Science in Primary Schools.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed EDU3154 Professional Experience: Primary BEd may not enrol in the unit for credit
Notes Prior to placement in any school for Professional Experience, it is mandatory that pre-service teachers complete or obtain several forms and clearances.

Assessment A result of Ungraded Pass or Fail is awarded for this unit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
