Diversity and Inclusion (EDN612)

|Description||Teachers have a responsibility to understand diversity and teach in ways that are inclusive of all students, regardless of cultural background, social class, gender and sexuality, or dis/ability. This is a 'big ask' for beginning teachers. In order to assist in negotiating complexity of inclusive education, the unit will:
- Introduce you to aspects of diversity that you are likely to encounter in primary and secondary school contexts.
- Explore ways in which diversity can be accommodated in inclusive classroom / school.
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit it is expected that students will have:
1. Developed an appreciation of the complexity involved in accommodating diversity and inclusion in Australian schools and classrooms.
2. A capacity to identify ways to develop inclusive educational environments and facilitate access to learning.
3. Developed a repertoire of teaching strategies that are responsive to the learning strengths and needs of students from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds.
4. A capacity to identify teaching strategies that may be appropriate for students with intellectual dis / ability.
5. A broad knowledge and understanding of the impact of culture, cultural identity and linguistic background on the education of students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander backgrounds.
6. The ability to differentiate in terms of teaching and task design in order to meet the specific needs of students across a range of abilities.
7. The ability to identify factors - international, national, humanitarian and social - that contribute to the development of legislation, policy and practice in accommodating diversity and supporting inclusion in schools.
8. A broad knowledge and understanding of legislative requirements that impact practice in terms of accommodating diversity and being inclusive.
9. The ability to apply knowledge and understanding of diversity and inclusion in practical ways in professional placements.
10. The ability to analyse professional experiences in terms of diversity and inclusion and build a repertoire of cases and strategies to support continued professional development in this complex area.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures/seminars: 2 hours per week over 9 weeks.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||To fulfil the requirements of this unit (and to become effective, as well as reflective, education practitioners) students will need to read critically, and analyse and reflect on a range of issues including teaching strategies for differentiating learning, curricular issues associated with inclusion and learning environment requirements for teaching children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Block teaching periods will comprise lecture/seminar session. In addition there will be a non-contact period in which independent school based research will be conducted.

|Assessment||There are 2 assessments for this unit: a report based on your school based research project and an examination.|
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in the Master of Teaching (Primary) and completion of EDN5501 Transition to teaching and EDN563 Literacy and learning; OR enrolment in the Master of Teaching (Secondary) and completion of or co-enrolment in EDN550 Transition to Teaching and EDN582 Literacy and Numeracy in Secondary Education.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
