Research Project (EDN617)

Description This is the capstone research project of the Master of Teaching. In this unit students will apply their knowledge and understanding of principles of educational research and will engage in a small-scale empirical research project of their choice that is relevant to the school context where they undertake their final placement. The project can be framed as action-research or case-study research but is not limited to these formats.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1. To build upon the understandings developed in EDN616 and review and revise the research proposal
2. To develop and produce a capstone research project that reflects professional and practical learning
3. To share the refined proposal and finished research project in a peer-reviewed sessions for evaluation and improvement
4. To present the final research project in a professional forum
Timetabled Learning Activities mini-conference: ½ day (4 hours)
Unit Learning Experiences The unit combines lectures with online learning materials.
Other Learning Experiences Independent data collection and analysis activities relevant to research projects.
Assessment This unit involves three assessment activities:
1. Research proposal
2. Final research report
3. Presentation to the Profession
Prerequisites Enrolment in the Master of Teaching (Primary) and successful completion of all 500 level units, successful completion of EDN611 Professional Experience: Differentiation within Diverse Contexts, EDN612 Diversity and Inclusion, EDN613 The Integrated Curriculum in Primary Schools (HASS/HPE/Arts), EDN614 Science in the Primary Schools Curriculum, EDN616 Research for Teaching, and co-enrolment in EDN615 Final Professional Experience: Research in Practice.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
