Final Professional Experience Secondary: Research in Practice (EDN681)

Description This unit is the final unit of professional experience for pre-service teachers enrolled in the Master of Teaching (Secondary). It includes fieldwork, and on-campus workshops and meetings. Pre-service teachers will gradually take over full responsibility of the teaching/learning process during a block placement, and will link theories/theorists to the Seven Professional Standards and apply/reflect on this within their practice
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit pre-service teachers should to be able to demonstrate satisfactory achievement in each of the following:
1. Know students and how they learn
2. Know the content and how to teach it
3. Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning
4. Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments
5. Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning
6. Engage in professional learning
7. Engage professionally and develop partnerships with colleagues, parents/carers and the community
8. Demonstrate professional responsibility and ethical practice
Timetabled Learning Activities Workshops: 2 x 2.5 hours on campus.
Unit Learning Experiences This final professional experience is a transition into the profession. The block placement provides an opportunity to link theory to practice for both major and minor teaching areas in a supportive learning environment under the guidance of a professional mentor. LMS and Blended Learning will be used to connect students and to provide a platform for collaborative learning. Before Placement - Preparation for placement. Links to resources that focus on essential knowledge and skills. During Placement - Apply theory into practice under guidance of a professional mentor. Submit self-assessment at end of week one. After Placement - highlight memorable moments and provide evidence against the Professional Standards in the form of a professional portfolio.
Other Learning Experiences 8-week Block Placement in a secondary school during School Term 3.
Assessment Students are required to pass both the placement and portfolio components.

1. Placement (60%) Assessment of students for the school-based component of the Professional Internship will be based on the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
2. e-Portfolio (40%) Assessment of the e-Portfolio will be based on evidence of practice based on the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers
Prerequisites Enrolment in the Master of Teaching (Secondary) and successful completion of, or co-enrolment in, EDN617 Research Project, and successful completion of all other 500 and 600 level units.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
