Advanced Educational Research Seminar (EDU701)

Unit Learning Outcomes By the end of the unit students will be able to demonstrate:
1. Sound understanding and appreciation of major paradigms framing educational research.
2. Ability to engage others in experiencing different ways of knowing, being and valuing associated with key paradigms.
3. Critical understanding of how their own research study is governed by one or more key paradigms.
Timetabled Learning Activities Participation in regular research seminars with the Unit lecturer or other research seminars/conferences approved by the Unit lecturer.
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit is seminar based. Students participate in research seminars and are required to engage in and facilitate higher-order thinking and scholarly dialogue with the lecturer and other students. Higher-order thinking comprises creative, critical, reflective and visionary thinking about one's own ideas, beliefs and values. Scholarly dialogue involves engaging in active and empathic listening, explaining ones' thoughts to others in a mutually helpful manner, and questioning others' ideas in a respectful and compassionate way.
Assessment There are 4 assessments in the unit.
1. Leading scholarly discussion (25%)
2. Participation in scholarly discussion (25%)
3. Presentation of research study (25%)
4. Critical appraisal of research design (25%)
In order to pass the unit, a pass must be achieved in all 3 assessments.
Assessment is criterion referenced in relation to the unit learning outcomes.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
