Description This unit can be taken full or part-time. A written research proposal must be submitted to the School of Education Research Committee and presented orally to a research panel convened by the supervisors. The final proposal must have Research Ethics clearance before data collection can proceed. The thesis provides a critical analysis of the topic under consideration and demonstrates an understanding of the theory and practice of educational research.
Unit Learning Outcomes By the end of this unit, the student will have made progress towards completing their thesis.
Timetabled Learning Activities
Unit Learning Experiences Students undertake work on a major research dissertation independently with guidance from their supervisors.
Other Learning Experiences Students work on their doctoral study under the guidance of their supervisors. For full-time students, this means a minimum of 37.5 hours per week.
Assessment Supervisors provide feedback about students' work on their doctoral study.
Prerequisites Enrolment in the Master of Philosophy, Doctor of Education or Doctor of Philosophy courses.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
