Description Modern industrial processes rely heavily on embedded controllers, both for monitoring and control of operations and to provide warnings and alarms ensuring personnel safety. This unit explores microcontroller hardware and computer-based engineering tools, commonly used in Engineering and Science for the design, analysis and operation in various technological domains. This unit provides both hardware-oriented microcontroller laboratory sessions and computer-based workshops. Students will develop programming skills and learn about the constraints of developing for real-time environments.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Understand the fundamental principles of imperative and dataflow programming languages;
2. Be able to design programs to solve simple engineering problems;
3. Be able to write programs in languages such as MATLAB, VBA and Bascom Basic;
4. Be able to debug programs and test devices to assess their efficacy in solving problems.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 x 2 hours per week; workshops: 1 x 3 hours per week; laboratories: 2 hours per fortnight.
Unit Learning Experiences Students in this unit learn both the theoretical and practical aspects of engineering computing. They learn about programming languages and how to create programs that run on desktop computers from lectures and workshops. They also learn about how to write programs that have real-time behaviours by programming microcontrollers in the laboratory sessions. Moreover, they learn how to use computer programs to solve engineering problems, both with programming languages such as Matlab and Basic, but also using (and customising the behaviour) of spread sheets.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
