Fluid Mechanics (ENG201)

Description This unit introduces the principles of conservation and momentum transfer in the flow of fluids. Topics include the fundamental properties of fluids, hydrostatics, governing equations of fluid motion, dimensional analysis, pumps, pipe systems, fluid friction, and compressible flow.
Unit Learning Outcomes Students are expected to be able to: (1) understand the fundamental properties of fluids and apply them in calculations; (2) compute and interpret hydrostatic fluid phenomena; (3) comprehend the equations used to describe fluid flow and apply the general equations of motion to describe laminar flows; (4) apply the principles of conservation of mass, momentum and energy to fluid systems in motion; (5) perform experiments, interpret experimental results and prepare technical laboratory reports; and (6) undertake critical technical literature to prepare for a discussion on topics relevant to fluid mechanics at the end of the course.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures/tutorials: 2 x 2 hours per week; laboratories: 2 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit is traditional lectures where the lecture notes for each week will be made available the preceding week. Students will be expected to read the lecture notes prior to attending lectures, so that they may participate fully in discussions.
In this course, students will attend tutorial sessions, which will be designed to illuminate and expand on the lecture materials. This will take the form of worked examples and additional discussion, with students having the opportunity to ask questions about the lecture notes and assignments. At the tutorials, the unit coordinator will be available to discuss course materials and assignment questions with students.
Students will perform several experiments in fluid mechanics in 2-3 hours lab sessions during the semester. Experiments are designed to encourage students to link theory discussed in class with real life scenario encountered in the application of fluid mechanics such as transition to turbulence, piping systems and flow in open channels.
Other Learning Experiences Students will be exposed to 'Computational Fluid Dynamics' (CFD) and the use of the ASPEN Plus Code.
Assessment Students will complete multiple assignments, each containing several questions. The submission time and date will be listed on each assignment as it is posted. It is important that the marked assignments be reviewed by students, as the feedback is intended to assist student learning and preparation for the final exam. The answers to all questions will be posted once the submission time has passed.

Prerequisites Completion of all Part I units in the majors Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering or Environmental Engineering.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed EXM224 Principles of Unit Operations may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
