Pollution and its Control (ENG221)

Description An introduction to the study of pollution and its control, particularly discussing the relationship between wastewater and pollution. Examines the impacts of wastes on the environment, the ability of nature to assimilate wastes, and the natural physical, chemical and biological assimilative processes. Develops basic scientific and technical skills for pollution assessment with respect to the source, composition and characteristics of the wastes. Examines available technologies for pollution control and protection of water quality from municipal, urban, agricultural and industrial sources.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. define pollution in scientific terms;
2. explain the relationship between pollution and wastes;
3. use your knowledge to identify and analyse problems involving wastes and pollution;
4. create pollution control systems for water, air and solid wastes.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 2 x 1 hour per week; practical work: 1 x 3 hours per week for 8 weeks; workshops: 1 x 2 hours per week for 4 weeks.
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit includes structured timetabled learning (lectures and tutorials), timetabled semi-structured learning (practical work), self-directed study and group learning tasks. Students are expected to spend approximately 10 hours per week on this unit.
Other Learning Experiences There will be a number of laboratory works and site visits to industrial facilities and utility infrastructure during the timetabled practical sessions.
Assessment Students are assessed on the basis of mid-semester exam or assignments (20%), practical work (40%) and final examination (40%). The assessment tasks in this unit align to collectively demonstrate the unit learning outcomes, including the ability to design and create pollution control systems for wastes.
Prerequisites ENV102 Foundations of the Environment and CHE144 Foundations of Chemistry, or approval from the Unit Coordinator.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
