Chemical Process Kinetics (ENG255)

Description This unit considers the principles of chemical kinetics and the application of kinetics to various chemical/metallurgical processes. The unit considers the rate equations, reaction orders, rate constants, activation energy, reaction mechanisms and kinetic modelling of chemical and electrochemical reactions which involve homogeneous as well as heterogeneous reactions with particular attention to unit operations involved in mineral processing, hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Understand the basics of measurement and interpretation of rates of chemical reactions,
2. Plan experimental procedures required to obtain reliable kinetic data for a reaction of interest and determine the most suitable conditions to achieve the fastest rate,
3. Use the kinetic data to propose reaction mechanisms,
4. Use experimental data and kinetic models based on batch tests to model continuous unit operations relevant to chemical, mineral processing and extractive metallurgical plants.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 x 3 hours per week; laboratories: 1 x 3 hours per week
Unit Learning Experiences Lecture material
The lecture material will be provided as course notes and lecture slides on LMS related to structured learning of 2-3 h per week.

Practice problems
Practice problems and solutions on each section will be provided to consolidate learning and problem solving ability.

During the 1 h workshop a 15 minute exercise on the material covered during the week will be given as a short test (in class or on-line). The test marks will be counted for assessment of class test component (15% of final assessment). The assignments will be group activities for 2-3 students in a group. Feedback on both test and assignments will be available for the students before the next test/assignment.

Self directed learning
A self-directed learning exercise will also be given to apply the knowledge acquired during the first 10 weeks to be applied for a chemical process in practise and a 2-3 page report to be submitted in week 12.

Laboratory exercises
Each laboratory exercise will be a 3 h group activity (2-3 in a group) for 8 weeks. Four short laboratory reports will be written by individuals and other four will be accepted as group (detailed) reports. Feedback on laboratory exercises will be based on the laboratory reports.
Assessment Practical Exercises - 30%. Student will write laboratory reports and receive feedback through marked reports.
Assignment - 15%. Use of the materials covered, research and some self-directed study. Each assignment will involve problem solving exercises.
Class tests - 15%. Based on lecture presentation slides and practice problems and solutions
Closed Book Theory Examination - 40%.
Prerequisites All Part I units in the Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering Honours major.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
