Circuits and Systems II (ENG297)

Description This unit provides the necessary skills for the analysis of alternating current (ac) electrical circuits and systems. In particular, it is concerned with the steady-state analysis of circuits with sinusoidal sources, the different types of power associated with ac circuits, three-phase circuits, frequency response, filters and transformers.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Understand the fundamental principles which govern AC electrical systems;
2. Use algebraic and other computational tools in solving electrical problems on paper;
3. Create simple computer programs that model the behaviour of AC electric circuits, for automating repetitive calculations;
4. Build, analyse and test electrical elements and circuits in a laboratory setting.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lecture: 1 x 2 hour session per week; laboratory: 1 x 3 hour session per week; workshops: 1 x 2 hour session per week.
Unit Learning Experiences The unit relies heavily on independent study with all unit material available on LMS. A two-hour lecture and a two-hour workshop provide you with the opportunity to review important concepts with the lecturer and tutor and discuss a number of problems related to the study program. An important part of the unit is the three-hour laboratory sessions where you have the opportunity to explore a range of ac circuits analysis techniques through practical and simulation studies. It is essential that students engage in all three activities if they are to obtain the full benefit from this unit. It is to be noted that workshops and laboratories do not run on every week and their schedules will be announced during the semester through LMS announcements.
Assessment Laboratory 20%; Assignment 20%; Final examination 40%; and Mid-semester test 20%

The laboratory sessions will be assessed on the basis of your competency and understanding in the completion of the laboratory exercises. The Assignment requires the students working in groups. Each student should participate in the complete process, all students should agree upon what needs to be done and who should perform the tasks. You should discuss the tasks and check each other. A final examination will be held during the examinations period at the end of the semester while a mid-semester test will be held in the middle of the semester.
Prerequisites ENG125 Circuits and Systems I AND MAS182 Applied Mathematics or equivalent.
Exclusions ENG243 Circuits and Systems II.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
