Electromechanical Energy Conversion (ENG317)

|Description||This unit is concerned with the principles of energy conversion between mechanical and electrical systems and vice versa. It investigates and models the behaviour of transformers and a range of electrical machines, including synchronous, induction, and DC generators and motors.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||The unit learning outcomes (ULOs) of this unit are as follows:
1. Critical and creative thinking: Students learn how to collect, analyse and evaluate information and ideas on electric machines and their applications.
2. In-depth knowledge: Students gain a very good knowledge about technical aspects of electric machines and how to analyse these machines.
3. Communication: Students are able to communicate effectively and appropriately and improve their writing, speaking, listening and reading skills.
4. Social interaction: Students develop a capacity to collaborate with others to exchange views and ideas and to achieve desired outcomes through teamwork and negotiation.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures: 1 x 2 hours per week; workshops: 1 x 2 hours per week; laboratories: 1 x 3 hours per week.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is to attend the 2 hour lecture every week and then attempt the workshop problems posted on the LMS. The workshop time gives students the opportunity to discuss with their lecturer any problems they may have encountered in trying to solve the workshop problems. The solutions to the workshop problems will be available to the students through the LMS later on in the week. In the laboratory, the students work in small groups of two or three, and try to set up an experiment, take measurements, analyse the results and make conclusions. The two (mini) projects help students to apply the knowledge they gained in the classroom to find the solution to a problem and this involves some modelling and simulation. The mid semester test and the final examination require numerical solutions to problems and cover topics studied in the unit.|
|Other Learning Experiences||Project work is offered in terms of two mini projects which involve some modelling and simulation work on a PC. Students do these projects as part of their self-directed learning.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
