BioEnergy and Biological Wastewater Treatment (ENG342)

|Description||This unit introduces the student to the principles of mass and energy flow in natural and engineered ecosystems (e.g. aqueous environments, bioreactors, agriculture, industry). Reasons for waste accumulation are evaluated. Steady-state equilibria are investigated as possible drivers of sustainable processes. Key environmental technologies that turn wastes to resources (e.g. waste to energy, bio-conversion, water recycling, nutrient recovery etc.) or limit pollution will be covered in detail and implementation options debated. Students learn to quantify biological waste and wastewater treatment processes.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||The completion of this unit enables students to
1. Explain the components that make modern urban and industrial waste water treatment work.
2. Design concepts for the treatment of wastewater with respect to pollutant removal, energy costs and reaction kinetics.
3. Differentiate and integrate bio-geochemical processes (reduction of N, S and C).
4. Predict the effect of design options on water treatment by using computer models.
5. Quantify, trouble-shoot and optimise biological wastewater treatment processes.
6. Use fundamental thermodynamical, kinetic and stoichiometric principles as the foundation for the quantification of biological and chemical aqueous processes. 7. Control the growth of microbes for the purpose of industrial and environmental processes.
8. Evaluate which processes are technologically and economically suitable.
9. Communicate with water professionals on water recycling and treatment issues.
10. Apply their knowledge of biofilm formation for a number of water related issues (e.g., diffusion controlled bioprocesses, redox mediation).
11. Recognise the basis for and effects of microbial corrosion.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures: 1 hour per week; workshops/laboratories: 1 x 3 hours per week.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||Next to structured lecture (1 hour) and workshop/laboratory sessions (3 hours) this unit will offer third year students the opportunity to engage with industry experts and senior research academics engaged in waste treatment. In addition to Murdoch university staff guiding and facilitating students to critically engage with their research projects, there will be experts from local waste management industry encouraging students to propose and justify process improvements.|
|Other Learning Experiences||The use of online tasks accompanied by short videoclips, computer based learning activities and process simulations encourage student centred, problem based learning approaches.|
|Assessment||The learning and assessment strategies are based on the student's understanding of principles rather than memorisation of facts and case studies. Accordingly in assessment students provide reasoning and quantitative estimations/ calculations about the accumulation and treatment processes of wastes rather than their description. Assessments include a mixture of online problem based learning activities, laboratory group work, quantitative interpretation of simulated processes,. Adaptive assessment methods may be used is where applicable.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
