SCADA and Systems Architecture (ENG448)

Description The main objective of this unit is to provide a solid understanding and practical experience, with several SCADA systems, typical architectures and several different types of communication networks and industrial devices. Practical exposure with several systems will be provide with some of the topics including Siemens Graph and SCL, VSDs, Profibus, WinCC and Experion.
Unit Learning Outcomes At the completion of this unit, students are expected have experience and knowledge in
1. Group Skills - Team work and technical reports
2. Design, setup and commissioning
3. Databases, programming, Graph & SCL
4. Profibus and WinCC
5. Honeywell Experion
Timetabled Learning Activities Workshops: 2 x 3 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences This unit has a very strong practical element. Students are exposed to several commercially available industrial SCADA systems and components. Weekly workshop activities involve programming, configuration and operation of controllers, HMIs and industrial server systems.
Other Learning Experiences The laboratory facilities are available 24/7, which is a necessity for access and further learning using the specialised devices and software used in this unit. This facilitates both informal and formal group work and communication.
Assessment There are three major forms of assessment for this unit with the indicated weightings as below:
15% Laboratory Competency; 35% Group Projects; 50% Tests.
Prerequisites ENG311 PLC Systems, ENG319 Real Time and Embedded Systems, ENG321 Instrument and Communication Systems.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
