Engineering Honours Thesis (ENG470)

Description This unit provides students with a sustained engineering project under the guidance of an experienced supervisor. This capstone unit involves project specification, design, implementation, testing, documentation, demonstration and presentation. Projects will contain significant background research and be selected on the basis of their novelty and innovation. Students may undertake projects on campus or on placement with industry partners. Students must prepare project plans, literature review reports, final thesis reports, deliver seminars describing outcomes and attend regular meetings with supervisors as required.
Unit Learning Outcomes On completing this unit a student will be able to:
1. apply specialised engineering knowledge, skills and competencies to an open-ended research or industrial task;
2. manage a research or industrial project, from planning through to execution;
3. research novel and emerging ideas in a particular engineering discipline;
4. apply an effective process for searching and evaluating solutions to complex open-ended problems;
5. communicate findings through oral and written presentations to their peers.
Timetabled Learning Activities
Unit Learning Experiences Students undertake self-directed research and development projects based from a university laboratory space or an industrial setting. The project provides a full-time load and requires about 80 full working days of commitment to achieve sufficient outcomes. Thus each project involves about 600 hours of design, development, testing and documentation. Students enrolled in the Y and H periods work half-time for 160 working days resulting in an identical commitment of time.
Assessment Project Induction: A compulsory ten point check list for students to complete as their first activity, to ensure they have discussed the key planning stages with their supervisors.
Project Plan: a review of initial research and a schedule of activities.
Literature Review: A report midway through the project, comprised of significant research progress, by writing one chapter on the background of the thesis.
Project Presentation: Oral presentation of the key findings and/or outcomes to the peer group and supervisors and other academic staff or industry.
Supervisor Assessment: An assessment of student conduct throughout the project.
Final Thesis: A report of around 15,000 words providing a detailed description of the project motivation, literature review, execution, testing, results and conclusions.
Prerequisites Students must have completed 48 points of 200, 300 and 400 level units in one of the following majors:

Electrical Power Engineering
Environmental Engineering

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
