Exercise, Programming and Prescription (EXS303)

|Description||This capstone unit will build on previous study focused on client and athlete assessment. Students will learn how to develop exercise programs and prescriptions for health-related benefits in apparently healthy and low-risk individuals as well as individuals with various health conditions. Student will utilise knowledge and skills gained throughout the Sports and Health Science Major to design and implement individualised exercise and lifestyle programs whilst developing a capstone project demonstrating and applying that knowledge in the real world.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||1. Deliver individual and group exercise programs based on best practice to meet specific health, fitness and sport/health performance goals in apparently healthy individuals, and clients with pathology and injury that has been prescribed by an appropriately qualified health professional
2. Prescribe and modify as necessary safe, appropriate and effective exercise programs based on best practice for the apparently healthy population that are aligned to health, fitness and performance needs and goals of clients
3. Integrate knowledge and skills in exercise delivery and prescription with other areas of exercise science
4. Explain and design population based physical activity recommendations
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures: 2 hours per week; laboratories: 2 hours per week.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The theoretical component of EXS303 aims to provide the student with the principles and practice of exercise programming and prescription for both low risk individuals and those with pre-existing medical conditions. The practical component of this unit will teach the student how to assess the various components of fitness and then apply a problem solving based approach to developing appropriate exercise programs for a variety of scenarios|
|Assessment||Students will be assessed utilising several assessment techniques. These include: Individual Case Study, Group Case Study Presentation, Final Laboratory Assessment and Final Theory Examination.

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
