Description This unit extends students' knowledge in art and design theory and production in relation to games art. The unit will focus on putting theory into practice, requiring students to explore and visualise concepts and then generate sophisticated game-ready assets.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
ULO1. Model, texture, light, and populate a 3D terrain in a commercially relevant game engine.
ULO2. Demonstrate a broad understanding and basic ability with a variety of 3D game art techniques and methods, importing models, textures, and animations; setting up materials.
ULO3. Created a commercially acceptable game asset, both in terms of quality and production method.
ULO4. Be able to express knowledge of game art principles and techniques in both written (discussion based, or essay) and demonstrated (created works) forms.
ULO5. Show basic awareness of ethical and legal boundaries around commercial game art: copyright, ownership, derivative works, sampling/reuse.
Timetabled Learning Activities Online lecture; media laboratories: 3 hours per week
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit consists of students working through each stage of a commercial game art production process, applying the techniques from the lectures to produce professional quality game art assets. The lectures outline the theory of games art across domains such as character design, lighting, 3D modelling, texturing, terrains, world building, animation, and rigging.
Assessment Assessment and feedback are iterative in that each assignment will cumulatively build on the next. Students receive feedback through in class discussion and weekly project work, homework exercises, written assignments, student group work, and online assignment feedback and discussion. Students will also be expected to read additional technical articles and analyse contemporary examples of games art.
Prerequisites GAD154 Introduction to Games Art and Design.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed MCC261 Games Art cannot enrol in this unit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
