Data Science Group Project (ICT625)

Description Students will work in teams to undertake a real-world data science project, applying skills and knowledge developed in their degree. Teams will analyse project requirements, evaluate and justify design decisions, and produce a substantial artefact. Project management and communication with clients and other stakeholders will be emphasised. Projects can be initiated from industry needs, University needs, or proposed by the student in consultation with a discipline academic. The project culminates with a public presentation of the project deliverables.

Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures/Workshops: 3 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit is focused on providing a learning experience that is based on the kind of professional experiences that graduates will encounter, allowing them to apply the whole range of knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course to a challenging real problem. In addition to regular interactive workshops, each team will meet with their supervisor weekly, their clients regularly, and their team frequently. Each team will produce: a requirements document; a project management plan; and project deliverables that will be negotiable depending on the nature and scope of the project. The project culminates with a public presentation of the project deliverables.
Assessment Assessment in this unit will primarily involve group tasks. You will be assessed on the following:

· Requirements Document (15%)
· Project Management Plan (10%)
· Project Main Deliverables (65%)
· Presentations (10%)

The main required project deliverables will depend on the nature and scope of the project and will be agreed upon with both the client and your supervisor. They might include software, hardware, design, development and technical documentation, analyses of data, new algorithms, new methods etc. related to data science. Written feedback will be provided for all submitted work. Verbal feedback will also be provided during supervision meeting.
Prerequisites ICT508 Information Technology Project Management - and a minimum of 24 points.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
