Description This is an in-country study unit offered in conjunction with Murdoch's student exchange partner universities in Japan (currently 10 institutions). The unit encompasses various studies in Japan, including intensive language, fieldwork and area studies.
Unit Learning Outcomes The prime objective of this unit is to provide students with intensive Japanese language training and in-country experience which will enable them to participate in and observe Japanese society and Japanese people at first hand. Their experience in Japan will be invaluable and largely responsible for shaping their perceptions of Japan especially in terms of their chosen career destination.
Timetabled Learning Activities No regular class at Murdoch; students follow their host universities' academic programs approved by Murdoch.
Assessment The student's academic performance is assessed on an ungraded pass or fail basis in reference to their learning outcomes in two components: firstly, their course results at their host university in Japan against designated minimum requirements for JPN543; and, secondly, a research essay in Japanese to be submitted to the Unit Coordinator of JPN543.
Prerequisites Requires permission of the Unit Coordinator. Host institutions have particular requirements for admission.
Notes As this unit is offered on the basis of Murdoch's student exchange agreements with Japanese universities, places are limited and all intending students must apply to the Unit Coordinator. Strict conditions and additional costs apply, but a variety of generous scholarship opportunities are also available. Contact the Unit Coordinator for further information. Students undertaking this unit will need to be aware of travel advice as published by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
Assessment A result of Ungraded Pass or Fail is awarded for this unit.

All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
