|Description||This unit introduces students to the fundaments of reading and writing at university. This unit aims to develop the academic writing skills required to undertake university studies. Your writing tool-kit focuses specifically on the essay writing process, writing for argument and critical reading skills.|

|Timetabled Learning Activities||Workshops: 4 hours per week.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||This unit looks to explore the fundaments of academic writing primarily through a workshop format. This provides students with the most opportunity to develop their academic reading and academic writing skills through structured learning experiences that look to encourage students to embrace the power of academic argument and appreciate the role of clarity and purpose in academic writing.
Guidance will be offered for self-directed study (particularly, for the reading of peer-reviewed scholarly journals).
Particular attention will be paid to the skill aiming to develop the capacity to work effectively and cooperatively/collaboratively in groups or teams.
|Assessment||This unit has four assessment components: essay paragraph + one short essay of 1000 words (25%), in class research essay draft + one final research essay of 1500 words (45%) + tutorial participation (10%) and a final exam (20%). Formal assessment will take place through Murdoch's LMS system. This allows for comprehensive and constructive feedback to assist students in developing their academic skills in preparation for university.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
