Description This unit is a preparatory mathematics unit intended for students who have insufficient background for other units, in particular MAS162 Foundations of Discrete Mathematics and MAS182 Applied Mathematics. Topics include algebra; polynomials, exponential and logarithmic functions and their graphs; matrices; trigonometry; and basic concepts of differential and integral calculus and applications.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit, students should be able to:
1. Solve a variety of mathematical problems related to the Unit Content. In particular, students should be able to:
a. solve systems of linear equations using a variety of methods;
b. find function asymptotes, limits, and rates of change;
c. use trigonometry to model periodic behaviour;
d. find derivatives from first principles as well as apply the multiplication, quotient, and chain rules of derivatives;
e. model exponential growth and decay;
f. use the first and second derivative of a function to find and characterise relative extrema; and
g. carry out a variety of other analyses.
2. Explain conceptually the various methods covered in the unit their correct usage.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 4 x 1 hour per week; tutorials: 1 hour per week.
Unit Learning Experiences It is essential for internal students to attend all lectures and tutorials in this unit. External students can choose to watch the recorded lectures on Echo360 or to study from the textbook following the learning guide, but a combination of both is recommended.
This unit does not require a lot of extra reading outside of the material covered in lectures. Lecture notes will be provided from the beginning of the semester and will be used as a frame to guide the lectures. The best approach to study successfully is to have a quick look through the (current portion of the) lecture notes (or the learning guide) to get an idea of which topic(s) is/are being covered before attending/watching each lecture. After each lecture, it is an effective way to cement what you have learned by going over the section of the material that has just been covered, writing a dot-point summary of what you have learned and identifying any parts that you have not understood fully. You can then read the relevant section in the textbook, re-watch the lecture, discuss the topic with classmates on the unit discussion forum (on Learning Management System) or seek alternative sources. The key is to clear your doubts as soon as they occur. Your lecturer and tutors are also there to help.
The next task would be to do the relevant exercises as suggested in the learning guide. Internal students should (also) attempt 40-50% of the tutorial questions before attending a tutorial. External students can use the tutorial worksheets as an additional set of exercises. Solutions to each of the weekly tutorial worksheets will be provided at the end of the corresponding week.
Assessment Your ability to solve relevant mathematical problems will be assessed at regular intervals during the semester via assignments and a mid-semester test (internal only). These assessments are designed to allow you to demonstrate your ability in each of the content areas of the unit and to give you regular feedback on your progress, helping you to identify your areas of strength or weakness during the semester. Assignment solutions and results will be posted progressively on the Learning Management System.
The weightings for assessment items are as follows:

Mid-Semester Tests (2) - 15%
Final Examination - 60%
External Mode:
Assignments (5) - 30%
Final Examination - 70%
Prerequisites Nil.
Exclusions Students who have passed MAS182 Applied Mathematics or MAS161 Calculus and Matrix Algebra, or have achieved a final scaled score of 55% or more in ATAR Mathematics Specialist, WACE Mathematics Specialist 3C/3D or TEE Calculus may not enrol in this unit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
