Description MAS183 introduces students to data collection methods and statistical analyses common in the life and health sciences. Topics: summarising data with numbers and graphs, describing and comparing data distributions, probability and sampling distributions, sampling methods, statistical inference foundations (estimation and hypothesis testing), comparing measurements or proportions between groups, analysing relationships between variables, non-parametric methods. Throughout, students use statistical software, interpret its output, and report their conclusions.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1. use descriptive techniques to summare and interpret data;
2. apply probability concepts relating to diagnostic testing and sampling distributions;
3. apply hypothesis testing and interval estimation to diverse types of data;
4. recognise the relative statistical quality of data;
5. assess the extent to which statistical analyses may (or may not) be valid;
6. perform statistical analyses using computer software;
7. communicate the content and conclusions of basic statistical analyses.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 3 x 1 hour per week; laboratories/tutorials: 1 x 1 hour per week; optional Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS): 1 hour per week.
Unit Learning Experiences MAS183 uses a conversational learning approach that interweaves your private study and group learning with individual and group expression of your learning. The conversation begins with your pre-reading in preparation for lectures, followed by engagement with lecture content. Then in private study you digest this content and prepare for computer lab and/or tutorial work in which group-work and sharing of understanding is encouraged, and tutors provide feedback. In further private and/or group study you will reflect on this feedback to consolidate your learning. Learning Management System supports your learning activities by providing all unit information, learning materials and assignments in a timely way, as well as furthering the learning conversation via announcements and well-supported discussion fora.
Other Learning Experiences A range of optional tutorials, labs, clinics, workshops and peer study sessions provide learning help and enrichment as needed.
Assessment Your ability to correctly apply statistical methods will be assessed at regular intervals during the semester via assignments, tutorial participations and presentations (internal only), and mid-semester tests (internal only). These assessments are designed to allow you to demonstrate your ability in each of the content areas of the unit and to give you regular feedback on your progress, helping you to identify your areas of strength or weakness during the semester. Assignment solutions and results will be posted progressively on the Learning Management System.

Notes MAS183 assumes fluency in mathematics at about the level of Year 10 in Australian high schools. Students enrolling in MAS183 are invited to do a Maths Diagnostic Quiz which will refer them to maths learning support if this may be helpful. Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
