Environmental and Biological Modelling (MAS351)

|Description||This unit will examine in detail mathematical models of population ecology, biochemical kinetics, physiological problems, blood flow and spatial characteristics of the spread of pollutants and of disease as well as applications in groundwater flow and marine science (including ideas from basic oceanography). Mathematical techniques covered may include regular and singular perturbation theory, conservation laws and dimensional analysis, complex variables and partial differential equations. Numerical analysis will be incorporated throughout the unit as it is required.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||1. Have the technical skills to identify and solve mathematical problems involving differential equations with variable coefficients.
2. Identify problems involving a small parameter and solve using perturbation techniques.
3. Identify and formulate problems involving partial differential equations from real world scenarios.
4. Solve and interpret solutions to problems involving models of various real-world phenomena, including groundwater flow, fluid mechanics, chemical kinetics and structures.
5. Interpret problems to identify appropriate solution techniques. Formulate, solve and interpret results in the context of the real application.

|Unit Learning Experiences||This unit uses a mixture of structured activities and assessments to assist students in learning the material covered in the unit. Structured activities include lectures and tutorials, and assessments include assignments, a project, and a final exam.
The approach to learning in this unit is via example and practice problem solving. The lectures in the unit provide background material and worked examples showing applications of various mathematical techniques for exploring various modelling problems. The tutorials provide further learning via tutor assisted problem exploration and solving.
|Assessment||All students' abilities to correctly apply mathematical modelling methods will be assessed at regular intervals during the semester via assignments and a mid-semester test (internal only). These assessments are designed to allow students to demonstrate their ability in each of the content areas of the unit and to give you regular feedback on their progress, helping them to identify their areas of strength or weakness during the semester. Assignment solutions and results will be posted progressively on the Learning Management System.
The weightings for assessment items are as follows:
Assignments (4) - 20%
Mid-Semester Test - 10%
Final Examination - 70%

|Prerequisites||MAS221/MAS208 Mathematical Modelling OR MAS220/MAS261 Mathematical Methods.|
|Exclusions||Students may not enrol in this unit and any of MAS164 Fundamentals of Mathematics, MAS182 Applied Mathematics, or MAS161 Calculus and Matrix Algebra concurrently. Students who have successfully completed MAS305 Environmental and Biological Modelling cannot enrol in this unit for credit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
