|Description||This unit focuses on the role of the consultant or change agent (internal and external) and the applications and limitations of established change consulting approaches in different contexts. Broad approaches or planned interventions explored include: Organisational Development (OD); Organisational Transformation (OT); HR Interventions; Knowledge Management and Organisational Learning, ICT implementation and Business Process Re-engineering (BPR).|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Describe the nature of change consultancy and its relationship to organisations and management. Also the general principles of planned and emergent change management, change communication and the different models and interventions applicable for bringing about change in different organisational contexts or environments.
2. Explain the way in which various academic disciplines and consultancy approaches such as: Organisational Behaviour; Organisational Theory; Organisational Development,(OD); Organisational Transformation, (OT); Human Resource Management (HRM); Strategic Management, Management Information Systems(MIS), Knowledge Management(KM) and Organisational Learning; Organisation case study analysis and applied research processes including Action Research - have informed the development of change management theory and practice.
3. Demonstrate a clear understanding of OT versus OD based approaches to change and their strengths and limitations.
4. Explain the nature and operation of the client-consultant relationship and how this impacts the success of consultancy interventions.
5. Outline and explain the key strategic considerations for positioning and managing professional services firms in specific local, national and international markets.
6. Outline the skills criteria that can be used to select consultants (internal and external).
7. Discuss the various issues that arise commonly in change consulting practice - Stated change purpose v client agendas, ethical considerations, recognition, role conflict, leverage and rewards, confidentiality, reporting, measures and results.
8. Demonstrated ability to undertake consulting or case study based research in organisations, disseminate and discuss the findings in an in class multimedia presentation

All offerings of this unit include the equivalent of 30 hours of structured learning.
|Unit Learning Experiences||The unit is delivered using blended learning design features with core unit materials provided in a digital format followed up by in class discussions, case study exercises and assignments designed to foster knowledge application and skills development. This is enhanced by structured self-directed learning to further develop skills and application of knowledge to practical and current issues. Organisational Development, Organisational Transformation and related change management consultancy processes are explored through, lectures, video interviews with experts, in class exercises, case analysis and discussions. The learning process of the unit focuses specifically consultant/client relationship and application of methodologies appropriate for leading, planning, implementing and communicating change in different organisational contexts|
|Other Learning Experiences||The team based organisational consultancy or applied research based, in class or online multimedia presentations are integral to the learning process, offering students insights into organisational change processes in a wide range of organisational contexts.|
|Assessment||The team based organisational consultancy or applied research based, in class or online multimedia presentations are integral to the learning process, offering students insights into organisational change processes in a wide range of organisational contexts. The initial consulting/applied research proposal and related presentation offer deep coverage of one change management or consulting approach . This is balanced out by individual assessment in the exam which requires the student to demonstrate breadth of knowledge of themes, models and methods covered in lectures, case exercises, readings and text chapters.

|Exclusions||Students who have successfully completed MBS648/MBS548 Organisational Change, Management and Consultancy may not enrol in this unit for credit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
