Applied Research Practicum (MBS643)

|Description||Students collaborate in groups to develop a proposed solution to a real-world project defined by an industry partner working across a variety of sectors. Students will apply cognate discipline knowledge, problem-solving capability and research skills in developing their proposal, and further build workplace relevant skills including business report writing and presentation skills, cross-discipline collaboration, ethical and communication using digital business tools. The unit further builds student capacity for self-reflection and professional development, including personal brand and reflective practice.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

|Timetabled Learning Activities||12 x 3 hour seminars|
|Unit Learning Experiences||Where relevant, students will be expected to attend regular workshops which focus on developing professional skills. Students, working in multidisciplinary teams and in conjunction with academic supervisors and guidance from industry professionals (where relevant), will undertake an applied research project approved by the Unit Coordinator. Projects come from a variety of sources including; government, not-for-profits or commercial organisations. The unit provides opportunities for 'learning by doing'. Students share the outcomes of their applied project through formal presentations to their peers, academic staff and industry. These presentations prompt reflection, discussion and debate, providing further opportunities for collaborative learning. Throughout this process, academic supervisors and industry partners, provide guidance and coaching.|
|Other Learning Experiences||Non-timetabled learning experiences are particularly important in this unit. The unit readings, preparation of assessment items and other out-of-class tasks involve independent, guided scholarship and the application of knowledge and skills with a high level of personal autonomy and accountability. Regular attendance at workshops and seminars with academic supervisors and/or industry coaches will be expected, and is additional to project work. Presentation sessions are where students share their experiences with their peers,academics and industry.|

|Prerequisites||Enrolment in a Master's Program, completion of at least 24 points of Masters units. Completing MBS520 Research Preparation for Business is recommended prior to enrolling in this unit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
