Description For human resource management (HRM) to be effective it requires the development of effective practices that serve to resource, support and manage human resource systems. This unit covers the first phase of HRM including human resources planning, employer branding, recruitment and selection of staff. The description and use of selection tools and techniques is also outlined, including why and when they should be used, and the issues with each.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1. Evaluate the relationship between the human resource planning function, and the staffing activities an organisation must undertake.
2. Apply appropriate statistical techniques to various recruitment & selection tools and understand the data gathered.
3. Analyse employer branding and explain the importance of its relationship to the recruitment process.
4 Appraise various positions within an organisation to apply appropriate selection techniques.
5. Evaluate organisational human resources needs to appropriately plan and conduct a selection interview, and differentiate between applicants.
6. Critique applicant assessments to identify and manage errors and biases that may occur in subjective assessments.
Timetabled Learning Activities Workshops: 2 hours per teaching week for South Street Campus
All offerings of this unit include the equivalent of 30 hours of structured learning.
Unit Learning Experiences The unit is delivered using blended learning design features with core units materials provided in a digital format followed up by small class knowledge application and skills development. This is enhanced by self-directed learning to further develop skills and application of knowledge to practical and current issues.

Assessment 2: Job Description and Job Specification 30%
Assessment 3: Selection Program 40%
Prerequisites Enrolment in a graduate-level course.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed MBS511 Acquisition of Human Resources may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
