Description Sound Design as a term refers both to the creation of individual sounds and the overall discipline of creating a unified sound component of a creative work. This unit extends skills in recording, editing and mixing sounds to create and synthesise new sound elements, or entire soundtracks, for particular outputs such as industrial sound design, film and television, installations, as well as interactive media such as games or simulations.
Unit Learning Outcomes ULO1 Apply the principles and concepts of location sound recording specific to film and television
ULO2 apply recognised methods and appropriate practical techniques and tools related to sound post production, and be able to adapt these techniques as necessary
ULO3 apply fundamental principles and concepts of interactive sound design.
ULO4 communicate through the creative use of sound in a variety of modes, to diverse audiences, and for a range of purposes
ULO5 Deliver sound projects using professional standards
ULO6 deliver written materials using the standards and norms of professional post-production practice
ULO7 maintain professional standards of project-keeping
Timetabled Learning Activities Lecture/Seminars: 1 fortnightly; Media Lab: 2 hour weekly
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit is modelling professional practice. The experiences and assessments involve typical methods and problems when devising creative strategies to implement sound designs in a range of media. In linear media such as documentary and fiction films the whole process of developing the soundtrack from location scouting and sound recording, through to dialogue and foley rerecording, sound editing and mixing is covered. In interactive sound design a range of typical uses for sound are examined, often from the perspective of a video game, but equally for use in simulators or product design.
Other Learning Experiences Occasionally guest lectures may be given, e.g. via skype with practitioners discussing their work. These events are often timetabled outside normal class times to accommodate the significant time differences between the participants.

3 Choice of either full interactive game sound project OR full soundtrack for film project
Prerequisites SOU101 Introduction to Audio Production
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed MCC376/SOU376 Sound Design may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
