|Description||This unit develops knowledge of the conceptual, practical and policy aspects of sustainable development. The unit focuses on the implementation of sustainability at a local and sub-national level. Systems thinking and resilience are presented as key tools to both understand sustainability problems and develop sustainability solutions within social-ecological systems. The implementation of sustainability is then explored through a range of governance, business and civil society approaches.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||Upon successful completion of the unit students will be able to:
ULO 1 : Demonstrate a critical understanding of the principal concepts and theories of Systems thinking and Resilience thinking and their application to sustainability;
ULO 2 : Discuss the multiple inter-disciplinary perspectives which can be brought to bear in responding imaginatively to sustainability problems and in developing sustainability solutions; and
ULO 3 : Analyse the range of tools and processes to implement sustainability through Government, Business and Community sectors.
ULO 4 : Develop coherent sustainability solutions, based on a range of policy tools and a range of models of change;
ULO 5 : Work both independently, and collaboratively and respectfully with a range of people
ULO 6 : Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||For internal students, seminars are delivered in 4 day-long sessions held during the semester. The Unit Coordinator will confirm the exact attendance dates and closer to the commencement date of the teaching period.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit for internal students is based around 4 full day seminars, with a combination of lecture, workshop and tutorial. Interactive and problem based tasks are a feature of the seminars, so that students are continually engaging with the unit content. Students will be expected to come prepared to the seminars having read the core readings, and engaged with the range of multimedia resources provided. For both internal and external students, the LMS provides an extra mode of engagement and interaction, particularly in the periods between seminars.
For external students, the unit is comparable to other external units, with weekly lectures recorded especially for external students and regular online discussion.

|Exclusions||Students who have completed STP212 Sustainability, Ecology and Communities or SUS201 Sustainability, Ecology and Communities may not enrol in this unit for credit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
