Supervised Case Study Project (SWM620)
|Organisational Unit||Global Studies|
|Description||The supervised case study enables students to analyse in depth an issue of policy significance using relevant conceptual tools, professional skills, and theoretical perspectives. The case study (up to 5,000 words) can focus upon either governmental or non-governmental issues at international, national, state or local level. Through undertaking the case study, students develop evaluative, analytical and critical skills. It has two versions:
1. Desk Research Case Study (the standard option)
2. Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Case Study (by special arrangement only)
|Unit Learning Outcomes||1. Preparation and compilation of a literature review. Apply current research to a specific policy issue.
2. Analyse the impacts and propose solutions or recommendations.
3. (WIL option) Locate and analyse the profile and ambit of their WIL organisation within the relevant policy space.
4. (WIL option) Coherently present this information in an oral format.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||There are no timetabled learning activities. Students and supervisors collaborate to work out a mutually agreeable meeting structure during semester.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is a combination of semi-structured and self-directed learning. After identifying a suitable topic, students will discuss their policy case study subject and research plan with their supervisor, starting with a review of relevant literature. Students will need to display skills in written communication, organisation and time management, and the capacity for independent learning.|
|Other Learning Experiences||Readings/Self-Directed Study: 5 hours per week; Assessment: 5 hours per week.|
|Assessment||The unit is assessed by the student's supervisor on the basis of the student's demonstrated evaluative, analytical and critical skills in addressing their chosen topic. A student's ability to integrate existing literature with analysis of the chosen case study in the form of a policy paper is central to the assessment. The paper represents 100% of the total assessment (explained at Assessment Item 1 below), except in the case of the WIL version, in which an oral presentation is worth 30% (explained at Assessment Items 2 and 3 below).|
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in the Master of Public Policy and Management, Master of Development Studies, Master of International Affairs, Master of International Affairs and Security, Master of Health Administration, Policy and Leadership or Master of Health Policy and Leadership Affairs; completion of at least 24 credit points.|
|Exclusions||Students who have successfully completed SSH620 Advanced Policy Case Study cannot enrol in this unit for credit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
