Communication Skills for Postgraduate Study (TLC501)

|Description||Designed for graduate coursework students from all schools from non-English Speaking Backgrounds (NESB), this unit will help students develop the communication skills necessary for research and study in an Australian academic context. In this unit, students will: build confidence in cross-cultural contexts; improve their academic writing; develop analytical and critical skills; understand the importance of academic integrity and the appropriate use of research sources in their work; enhance their ability to communicate and discuss complex ideas with others.|

|Timetabled Learning Activities||For semester 2, 2018
Seminars: 1 x 2 hours per week; Workshop (computer lab): 1 x 2 hours per week.
|Unit Learning Experiences||The unit is delivered through a combination of in-class and online activities designed to help students to develop a range of communication skills. The broad theme of 'global issues' is used as a focus for practical, meaningful activities designed to develop fundamental oral and written communication skills. In the Seminars, students engage in critical discussion of weekly topics and readings, contribute to whole class and small-group activities such as discussions and debates, and work towards unit assignments. In the Workshops (computer labs), they develop academic research, writing and digital literacy skills, use a range of educational technologies, and work with tutors and peers to develop effective writing practices. Outside of class, students engage in online and real world activities, including online forum discussions and individually selected activities to develop their communication skills.
|Assessment||The assessment is based on contribution to a range of communication-based seminar activities; online activities to develop communication skills; and two written assignments, the second being a longer version and revision of the first.|
|Exclusions||This unit is designed for students for whom English is an additional language (EAL). Native English speakers in need of communication skills development may apply to the unit coordinator for admission.
|Notes||Students are expected to attend at least 10 of both classes (10 x Seminar and 10 x Workshop (computer lab) to be considered for a passing grade. Outside of the contact hours, students are expected to spend approximately 3 hours per week on self-directed study (including online activities to improve communication skills) and approximately 3 hours per week working towards assignments.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
